European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
