Our Top Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Top Place.

At first glance, this album could seem more like a challenging university examination rather than the latest pop album from a musician who just had a last single was a collaboration with a global K-pop icon. Split across four distinct sections and sung in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced work investigating female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the lens of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer daring alone renders the efforts of other artists seem rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That this album succeeds in transcend dry academic posturing feels almost miraculous, with full praise belonging to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, its ambitions feel far higher here, with the balancing act far more pronounced. What truly raises her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, is a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. When she's breaking hearts apart, you still desire to be alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

This playful spirit shines brightly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge crashes down with cartoonish impact. The track then segues to the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in you rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—what you will go to next."

Nearly every track finishes at a totally different point from how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony before collapsing into digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts off dark and sinister, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux involves navigating the gap between radical experimentation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spirals skyward. That feat is echoed by a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its inherent excess. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires patience to completely explore but never feels like a chore. While some major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous feast where the characters at it, some tipsy on holy wine, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
