Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of materials that contained no new data.
