The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
