A shadow economy for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Response and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with numerous of users, filled with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at home.

Within minutes of joining one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts show black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Measures

A representative for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
